artist’s photobook
part of the project The Land of Bizarre Rocks

2024

Eos is a visual journey through the underside of the Krasnoyarsk Stolby, a national park on the border between the city and the Siberian taiga. For nearly 200 years, a community has lived around its syenite crags in a singular relationship with the landscape, with one another, and with the very idea of freedom.

The book is woven from a personal archive of ten years in the life of the artist within the space of Stolby and the stolbisty subculture. Here, documentation of her circle’s everyday existence intertwines with images of local mythology — on the edge of mystery and mischief. Through wanderings in the night, endless meetings with the risings of the moon, the sun, and the stars, the book offers not so much to see as to feel the land of bizarre rocks.

Eos is the ancient Greek goddess of the dawn, who heralds the coming of light and the retreat of darkness. To greet and to bid farewell to the sun atop the crags is one of the local rituals most beloved. Light in the book becomes a guiding thread: it changes form, flows across the pages, and leads deep into the forest, the stones, and the cosmos.
