Elina Gusarova

03.08.1998

Elina Gusarova is a visual artist and researcher from Krasnoyarsk, Russia. In 2020, she founded the contemporary art center “YADRO” in her hometown, where she actively contributed to the development of the local art community. Since 2023, she has been based in Moscow, pursuing her art practice and studies at the Rodchenko School.

Growing up in the vast landscapes of Siberia, Elina’s work explores the profound connection between humanity and the environment. Within this connection, she is particularly interested in the forces that create and transform communities, identity and history.

She works with photography, archival research, textiles, and found objects. For Elina, physical interaction with research material is an essential part of her process. During her school years, she participated in an archaeological expedition near a World War II frontline, where she unearthed human remains with her own hands. This experience deeply shaped her understanding of history, transforming it from abstract knowledge into a tangible experience that calls for reflection and responsibility.

In her current project, Elina focusing on the Kolyma region in Russia, where her familial utopia confronts the collective catastrophe of mass repression. Combining visual research with physical presence, she seeks to fill the gaps between an idealized and a demonized history, to address difficult heritage that remains marginalized within official history and systems of identity to this day.
